چکیده

In this paper, we evaluate the performance of sonoelastography for prostate cancer detection. Ultrasound (US) B-mode and sonoelastographic volumes were acquired from five prostate glands ex vivo. Additionally, one more gland was imaged in vivo using a transrectal US probe. Semi-automatic algorithms were used to segment the surface of the gland from the B-mode volume and the tumors from sonoelastographic data. To assess the detection performance, three dimensional (3D) sonoelastographic findings were compared in size and position to 3D histological data. Sonoelastography detected seven out of nine cancers in the ex vivo prostate glands and two out of three malignant masses in the in vivo experiment. Overall, 3D sonoelastography has shown potential for prostate cancer detection albeit based on limited data. KeywordsElasticity imaging; three-dimensional sonoelastography; prostate cancer detection

Prostate cancer: three-dimensional sonoelastography for in vitro detection.

PURPOSE To prospectively evaluate the accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) sonoelastographic imaging, relative to that of gray-scale ultrasonography (US), in the in vitro detection of prostate cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was approved by the institutional review board and was HIPAA compliant. Informed consent was obtained from all patients. Nineteen prostatectomy specimens from patie...

Sonoelastographic evaluation with the determination of compressibility ratio for symmetrical prostatic regions in the diagnosis of clinically significant prostate cancer

AIM Sonoelastography is a technique that assesses tissue hardness/compressibility. Utility and sensitivity of the method in prostate cancer diagnostics were assessed compared to the current gold standard in prostate cancer diagnostics i.e. systematic biopsy. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study involved 84 patients suspected of prostate cancer based on elevated PSA levels or abnormal per rectal exa...

Transrectal sonoelastography in the detection of prostate cancers: a meta-analysis.

UNLABELLED What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? The accuracy of transrectal sonoelastography (TRSE) in the detection of prostate cancer is variable, with a sensitivity ranging from 51.1 to 91.7% and specificity ranging from 62.2 to 86.8%. This is the first meta-analysis to assess the overall accuracy of TRSE in the detection of prostate cancer. OBJECTIVE • To assess the o...

Crawling wave detection of prostate cancer: preliminary in vitro results.

PURPOSE The focus of this article is to develop signal and imaging processing methods to derive an accurate estimation of local tissue elasticity using the crawling wave (CrW) sonoelastography method. The task is to reduce noise and to improve the contrast of the elasticity map. METHODS The protocol of the CrW approach was first tested on heterogeneous elastic phantoms as a model of prostate ...

3d Sonoelastography for Prostate Tumor Imaging

Sonoelastography is a new imaging technique to detect hard tumors in soft tissue. In sonoelastography imaging low frequency (200-500 Hz) shear waves are propagated through a tissue sample while real time Doppler techniques are used to image the resulting vibration pattern on an ultrasound scanner. A sonoelastography image is therefore a mapping of the relative vibration amplitude of the tissue ...
